The original thread was getting rather long and I have progressed since then but if you would like to read the history click here
In Disk Manager I have my new HD recognised as a 78GB drive, it seemed that I was jumping the gun by expecting to create two partitions instead of creating one 78GB primary partition, formatting it and the creating an extended partition. at the moment the 78GB patition is busy formating.

I belive that I have to "Initialise" but I do not know how to do this and I would like to understand what it is. Can anyone help?

You should have kept to the original thread :-(

Initialise the hard drive is when you first come to diskmgmt.msc and Initialising will allow you to play with the drive.
