With a brand new computer, can I easily partition the drive (set up several virtual drives), or do I need a program like partition manager ?

If you are installing XP you can partition as you want during the setup process.

Or if you put it in as a Slave you can do it through Disc Management In Control Panel\Administrator

So with a new computer and only one disk with xp pre-installed, I am limited to Partion Magic or similar or a re-install ?

Thats about right.

You could put in a seperate hard drive, they are cheap and have as many partitions as you want on it.

Add a second hard disk and use something like disk image to create an image.
