Partitioning Hard drive

Need some help, I'm running Win Xp Pro and been having some problems recently, most of them requiring a reinstall, I was thinking of partitioning my hd and using 1 partiton for the O.S and all my files and the other with just the O.S, so that if I can't boot into the main partition, then maybe I can get into the other one and transfer my files across, is this possible? and if so any tips on how to do it.

If you have only 1 HDD then your best bet is Partition Magic which will allow you do do what you want with least pain.

This is only one way of many possibilities but no doubt this thread will become quite busy.
