Partitioning hard drive

I am trying to partition my hard drive but before I start I have a problem. My hard drive is already partitioned so I am going to increase the size of my smallest partition. Currently when I try to load any softtware or safe any documents it automatically defaults to the C drive. How can I stop this happening so I can store all my things onto a different drive. Bearing in mind it doesn't give me an option at the moment to store on alternate drives. Thanks

"when I try to load any softtware it automatically defaults to the C drive."

You need to select custom install and then select the drive to install to.

"or safe any documents"
You can move the My Documents folder to another drive click here XP

When downloading files you get the option to save , you should be able to select where to save i.e. another drive.
