iam running xp and have a 120 gb hdd would like to set up partions with a small one for xp would it then be possible to remove original xp without losing any information also what is the minimum size partion for xp any advice appreciated

I would back up all of your data and then partion the drive and install xp from sratch.

There are ultilites such as partion magic which can resize a partion without effecting data but it is still wise to backup just in case.

A xp install with sp2 is around the 1.5-2gig mark and then you need to leave space for your program files too. I would partion say 20-25gig off for my windows partion which would leave plently of room for program files, page file, system restore points and temporary files.
