Packard bell missing CD

A friend has an elderly packard bell desktop. Having formatted the 525MB HD (to reinstall W95) she finds that the CD drive is not reported in bios. There is definitely power to the drive (it opens and closes) but it is not shown, nor is it picked up by a Win98 boot disk with generic CD drivers on it. The cables are OK - I checked.

I suspect a dud drive, but she's not sure when it last worked.

I think she needs a new PC!

Any ideas folks?

Since the bios doesn't pick it up the most likely explanation is either its knackered or the IDE cable is loose or damaged

Is it possible to try your cdrom with it, that will tell you if the drive really is u/s.
