Packard Bell 400 Gb external Hard drive

My external hard drive used to self install. I returned hoe and the drive casing was very hot, too hot to hold, which was not the usual case. I turned off the drive and unplugged it from the computer. The drive no longer installs itself and there appears to be no recognition of it by my laptop. I need to recover the data, (photographs, web program, excel and word files) from it. I think the overheating was caused by the internal fan mal-functioning. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

went away for 8 weeks and forgot Maxtor 300gb external on. Came back and I get a buzzing noise from hard drive but nothing else. Whew, wonder what next step is? I'll also put a new topic on and see if anyone out there can help. Please let me know if you come up with a solution also. Thanks, skip
