Outlook uses Remote Access instead of Cable Modem

I have a home PC with Win XP Pro and ntl cable modem. I have remote access to my work PC. When I check my email in Outlook 2000 it sometimes activates my remote connection and then appears to use this to download my messages instead of going straight through the cable modem. How do I set the Broadband connection as the default for email (at the moment it is set as LAN). The only connections available to select when I check my 'accounts' in Outlook is my remote connection or an old dial up. Can anyone help?
Mike
