Outlook Problem - Help Please!

I have had Outlook (97 version) installed on a Dell computer for a while. Suddenly it will not open up. When I click on Outlook shortcut it shows a message stating:-
"The extension configuration file "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\Office\addins\MSFSMEMU.ECF" could not be installed. There is an error in the syntax or format of the file "C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\Office\addins\MSFSMEMU.ECF""

Outlook is showing as "running" in the program manager but cannot access at all.

Nothing has been changed on computer at all.

Any help would be appreciated - I am not brilliant at the technical stuff so easy explanations please if poss!

Many thanks,
Sarah

Is this the same PC where you had the problem removing McAfee, and has Outlook started misbehaving after you sorted that?

Something worth trying - go to Start and Search and type

outcmd.dat

When found right-click and delete it and then try to open Outlook again.

PS Did you try rawprawn's suggestion of a System Restore?
