Outlook issue with BT

Recently migrated to BT from TalkTalk and had nothing but grief from day one. The current issue is Outlook sending a 'ghost' email, ie, nothing in the Outbox. This eventually puts up an error message, which is annoying more than anything else.
Outlook started doing this the day after BT asked me to verify certain email addresses on the web server. However when I talked to them today about it, they tried to fix it, failed, and then told me that Outlook was the problem and needed up graded, which is absolute tosh!

Any ideas?
