Outlook Express and corrupted Inbox

Whilst I was accessing an Internet file from a hyperlink in OE6, the computer "hung". I re-booted but the same thing happened again. When I again rebooted, all of the messages in my inbox had disappeared and had been replaced by 75 messages from around Oct 2002, all of which had been stored in various other folders. Also, one of the folder names had been corrupted. The system is now working again but how can I get back the missing messages and how can I prevent it happening again?
