Outlook Express - Compacting Messages

This is a question put to me by an eldely friend:

"Quite often I get a message on my screen saying 'to free up disk space Outlook Express
can compact messages'. What exactly does that mean? I know what compact means, but what happens to my messages?"

I don't know the answer to this - can any one help me? On talking to her she is concerned that if she compacts her messages she will not be able to read/access them.

Nothing bad will happen - Windows will simply store them in a more efficient and compact fashion - same thing is done in Access. She won't notice any difference[except in the space they take up on her hdd] - all will be able to read as before.
