Outlook 2000

Outlook 2000 Premium on WinXP SP2. Cannot delete messages.
They will go from the inbox to the deleted items folder but they won't delete automatically from there when Outlook is closed . Even if they are deleted manually from the deleted items folder the next time Outlook is opened they all re-appear in the inbox.
Dumped the ‘pst’ file plus all the messages and accounts, uninstalled Office 2000 – ran CCleaner (cleaner + registry) then re-installed Office 2000 only to find that all the messages and accounts were still there with the same problem as before. No viruses or spyware on the computer. Any ideas anyone?

In Tools > Options > Other tab is 'Empty the Deleted items folder on exit' ticked?

In Tools > Account Settings, click on the account > Change. More Settings button > Advanced tab make sure 'Leave a copy of messages on the server is NOT ticked.

That's for Outlook 2007 - from memory it is similar in 2000.

Is the account IMAP or POP3 - there is a few additional steps if the account is IMAP.
