The other thermal paste question

The other thread about this paste made me remember. I recently removed the CPU fan to clean it out. I saw there had been something painted in between the cooling block and the CPU. Is this what thermal paste is for, and should I have used some?

Yes, unless there was some remaining on the CPU and heatsink. Even then it ought to have been renewed as the working (contact) surface could have easily become contaminated, especially if you were removing dust.

If you do decide to dismantle and renew the paste, heed the precautions given in the other recent threads and please use the real stuff and not (as I have known happen) Vaseline.

Thanks. I may just leave well alone as the PC has been performing fine for some weeks since.

I think that's wise. Doesn't pay to mess around with it too much.

Remember this if you do a simialr clean up again, though
