Orange Broadband

I am staying with a friend who has been succesfully using Orange broadband with Windows 2000 on his desktop. I am surprised at the arrangement as when you open internet explorer it seems to be dialling a connection, or at least that is what it says in the window. The logic seems to me to be that once the dial-up process is complete that I ought to be able to unplug the usb cable from his desktop and just plug it into a usb socket on my laptop running Windows XP for it to identify we are connected but it does not work that simply! Do I need to load all his Orange software all over again?
