operating system not found

  robinhood1 09:43 07 Feb 09

We have a pentium p2 300mhz pc running Windows ME that has served us well for many years, however recently when trying to start it, we get a black screen with the message "operating system not found", we turn it on and off perhaps 7 or 8 times and it finally loses this message and starts up, but sometimes not at all. Can anyone offer advice as to what is causing this ?

many thanks

u don't have anything like an external drive, or something plugged into the machine's usb port do you? If so switch off the drive/disconnect then re-boot.

Looks like the machine is booting to an item which does not have the operating system on it.
