opening ports for warcraft

  Belinda 18:38 03 Sep 07

My son has downloaded warcraft and - without my knowledge - followed their walk-through instructions to configure our firewall to open ports 3724,6112,6881-6999. Is it safe to leave these ports open or do they leave my PC vulnerable to hackers and other ill-intentioned bods? Any advice, please?

(Needless to say, my son will not be allowed access to the firewall settings again!)

Is Opening Firewall Ports Risky?
Every port you open makes your computer more vulnerable. However, opening a few ports in order to play a game or run a video conferencing application, for example, still leaves your system protected against the most common intruders. When you add a program to Windows Firewall, it only opens the necessary ports when that program is actually running; once you exit the program, the ports are then closed.

Hope this has put your mind at rest?
