Opening ports.

  joethebow 15:23 11 Feb 05

First off I'm a reasonably knolegable user.

I need to open around 20 ports for various applications.

I am running XP SP2 and AOL 1Mb. I have disabled the security centre, I have opened the ports in the XP firewall I have no other firewall running I am not using NAT. (I have even disabled the XP firewall but it didn't help).

When I run port tests from various websites they say my ports are undetectable or can not be located, meaning they are closed or in stelth mode.

When I try to use the ports things run like a slug.

Before I switched to AOL and rebuilt my system everything was fine, now I may as well be on dial up.

I think I've fixed it. It was a combination of 3 things:

1. The Ethernet connection to my X Box. When I disabled this I got a rise in speed.

2. XP Firewall. I disabled this and installed McAfee and I got another rise in speed.

3. I set the upload speed to minimum and now I'm getting downloads of 100K.

So it looks like the problem is solved.

Thanks for the help and tips guys.
