When I save email downloads to Word files they will not open. Does anyone have an answer to this. I get a dialogue box saying "you need a converter to open this file". Have I done something wrong here? This problem has arisen only in the last month or so.

Have you tried using Adobe Reader for the pdf files?

foxreader from click here a lot smaller than adobe and less intrusive.

I use Foxit Reader along with Adobe Reader and Foxit is, as suggested by jimv7, a small download and very unobtrusive in comparison.

If you use Open With... for the appropriate files and nominate Foxit Reader, .pdf files will open in it.

Plus Foxit is more than just a Reader if you look at that coloured bit near the off button

PS also on the left if you hover your mouse on the menu bit, you will see that you Have Typwriter so you can type on to a PDF doc
