Opening an Outlook Express attachment

A friend has sent me an email with an attachment containing a crossword composed by him, but on opening it I find it appears as a meaningless (to me) arrangement of empty squares and such, and no text. There is clearly some correct way of opening it to make it appear as it is intended to be seen, but I'm afraid I don't know how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated.

I think that you will have to ask him what program he used to create it and we can take it from there.

Do you know what the file extension (like jpg, .pps etc) is?

I would send it back asking what the format is.
