Opening OE back ups.

I use Mailstore Home for backing up OE to an external using XClone.
I'm about to get a new PC ( going from XP to Vista H.P.)
When I access the Mailstore folder on the back up the messages are contained (presumambly) in .dat files which open in code. I did read somewhere that with some applications you can change the name from .dat to .txt to open them, I tried with one of them, but doesn't work in this case.
No point in backing up in code so any suggestions to open them would be appreciated.

I also use Thunderbird and have just found that if I open its .exe on H I have all current emails. I back up daily. However still interested in the .dat solution.

Unable to find the MailstoreHome config. Must be different to Server.
Failing anything else I will back up to DVD or CD when the time comes assuming they burn as text.
Presumably I can also copy over the MSH programme to the new PC which should give me access to my emails.
