opening jpegs PLUS losing restore points.

I don't know if these two problems are neccesarily related it may be one problem drew my attention to the other.

When trying to open some jpeg files they wouldn't open and the computer froze trying to open them.
Task manager said that explorer.exe was using 99% of CPU. By trying lots of different things I finally got out and managed to shut down and start again without the problem persisting. i'm not sure what actually worked because every thing was so slow it was not clear that anything I did did anything!

However,I also discovered that my system restore points had disappeared. Anybody know why this might happen? I checked for malware. I have norton antivirus,spybot,adaware,spywareblaster,microsoftantispyware and I ran a couple of online antivirus, panda and trend.

Has any body come accross either of these things before?
