Opening an embedded email address

I upgraded to Office 2003 recently, and now I cannot click on an email address, embedded say on a webpage, to open a new email page. When I click on the address, I get a 'Choose Profile' dialogue box, and in the 'Profile Name' box I get Microsft Outlook as the only choice. (I am with NTL, and their system only uses Microsoft Outlook.) When I now click 'okay', I am told that the MAPI Spooler could not be started. I would be grateful for any advice.

Set the default E-mail client
Click Start, Run and type CONTROL INETCPL.CPL
Select the Programs tab
From the E-mail dropdown list, choose another mail client and click Apply
Re-do the procedure and set your preferred email client again
If that does not help, proceed further..

Creating new String value
Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to the following branch:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto

In the right-pane, create a new String value named URL Protocol
Close Regedit.exe

Thank you, VoG, for your full advice. I tried what you suggest: the Email dropdown list only has one option, and that is Microsoft Office Outlook. (Outlook Express appears under Newsgroups.)

There is what I assume is a string called URL Protocol under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT-backslash-mailto , Type REG_SZ, no data. I am not sure how to manipulate this.

I would download another e-mail client e.g. click here and try again.

I have downloaded another email client as you suggested. If I can't get it going I will start another strand. Thanks for your help,

Jonny
