Both types of document have "viewers" available as free downloads from MS - have a search on microsoft.com

Yes save the Doc as from file SAVE AS ascii it should then open as a generic Doc but it will not keep formating. should open OK in WordPad

I'm not sure which version "Works 7" is (I have Works 2000), but generally Works can open Microsoft Office files, such as Word and Excel, although Office cannot open files in native "Works" format.

I've just checked in my copy of Works 2000 and it can open/save MS Word 97-2002 (which is bizarre considering Word 2002 is newer than Works 2000!)

With Excel, it will open files (doesn't specify which versions) and will save as Excel 97-2000.
