Open System authenticates with Shared Key ???

Hi,

I'm new to wireless, but have done a lot of research on WEP before venturing onto WPA. I have now just one question left.

Excluding WPA, is it possible for a client in Open System to authenticate with it's AP that is using Shared Key? I understand that encryption is optional for Open System. Both of them are using the same encryption key.

I thought this was not possible, but it seems to be the case. I have an EDIMAX AR-7024Wg router and an EDIMAX PCI EW-7128g wireless card.

Before moving onto the wonders of WPA I have to suss WEP out first.

Thanks for anyone trying to help.

Sulligogs.

Can anyone assist?

As I said, I can put my wireless client into Open System mode, but have the AP in Shared Key mode.

Surely, if the AP sends out it's clear-text challenge message the client shouldn't know what it's for? And so authentication should break down.

And no, the AP definitely isn't using both options, just Shared Key.

Thanks for any help.
