Open Office - save as..?

  hawthorn59 03:12 15 Nov 07

Im using Open Office, and I notice some of my documents are saved as .odt and some as MS Word files (probably the ones I imported frm word). Does this matter?

I probably will eventually want them to open in Word, so how should I save my documents from now on?

Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP(.doc) Works for me in MS Works 8.5.

Basically I save in both formats for safety (.odt & .doc)

defaults to .odt which Word can't open, but you can opt to save as .doc

In OpenOffice you can change the save formats. Go to Tools>Options and expand the Load/Save tree in the left hand pane by clicking on the + sign. Select General. Now you should see the Default File Format area and the document types in the left drop down box and the "Always Save as" drop down box on the right. In the right hand drop down list you will find "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP".

You can also change the defaults of other programs by selecting them in the left hand box and choosing the same Microsoft option in the right.
