Open GL broken?

In the last couple of weeks I have had a couple of instances of error messages relating to Open GL. First was with Google Earth, which has been running smoothly for a couple of months and which by default uses open GL, but will now only work in DirectX. Second was the Trainz demo off the PCA cover disk; more Open GL error messages about mismatched drivers (?) on install, but it will run in DirectX.

What's gone wrong? Do I need to reinstall the graphics card drivers? Or is it a Windows update gone wrong???

uninstalling the old graphics drivers then installing the latest Nvidia Forceware drivers seems to have sorted it.

Any idea why the graphics drivers might suddenly go wrong? Windows update overwriting something? CCleaner hoovering out something it shouldn't? Teenager randomly deleting things?
