Of shame or embarrassment?
I have a machine being delivered to me to day that has died.
The story goes like this
Owner gets E-mail from 'Friend'
I contains a JPEG
She opens it and the image is 'orrible
Then machine shuts down and will not restart.
She phones friend to ask whats this.
Friend not from me love.
So some kind of virus/Trojan/ what have you
So suggestions please, what am I going to look for and what will kill it?

if it will not start in Safe Mode either probably a reformat might be best idea.
Laptop or Desktop.
Malwarebytes free is one of the best for removing nasties.
Try that if you can get the computer to start.

Another very good one is Trojan remover.
it is a pay for program but you get a 30 day trial and it will remove anything that it finds.
if it asks for payment ignore it and carry on with the scan.

Now I do not have a clue how to do this ,but as far as I know you can take the hard drive out run it on another computer either to save documents Etc or run a scan on it with your security programs.
But someone else would need to explain if this can be done or not.

I have Malawarewbytes on my 'Tools stick' and am now going to add the Trojan remover.

Can do with the harddrive with my IDE/USB cable and power supply.
Any more thoughts any one>

Two things spring to mind. First I would consider using a Linux Distro (I suggest Ubuntu) and boot from it`s CD. Then run an antivirus program from there.

The suggestion to use the IDE/USB cable is OK too. Run both an Anti-Virus scan and Malwarebytes as suggested. Then once you`re totally satisfied that the disk is clear of viruses I would transfer data only (Music, Documents to another completely empty external drive or storage media - you don`t want anything residing on your hard disk at this stage)

Now try to get the original machine back to normal and if necessary reinstall windows from scratch and then transfer back the data.

Best suggestion is to keep the forum informed as you go along. There`s usually someone about who can help along the way. Just decide which path you intend to take at each stage.

In deed as well as name.
Firing it up brings straight to
'Boot sector damaged.'
Pressing F8 brings up American Megatrends BIOS.
So getting to the DOS section to effect Win Repair/Make new boot sector etc. is eluding me.

OK so open her up connect my IDE USB take off the data and reformat-
1st move - open box - stumped
Instead of the bormal screws/thunb screws for side panel - a locking latch on the side and the rear panel that looks like a key is required - maybe a suitable screwdriver?
Any ideas?

Sometimes pressing F5 will get you into safe mode.

I think with all the damage this file could have done, it's prolly best as Buteman said from the get go, do a clean install of the os.....

When it first starts up, do you get the opportunity to press F10, if so you may be able to do a factory retore?

  lotvic 14:18 08 Jun 10

If it is XP
It's F10 for mesh factory restore menu Wizard
download the .pdf mesh instructions from Index of /mesh/onlinefiles click here
2nd one on list, MFRestore.pdf (it's only 153kb - 3 pages)

  lotvic 14:27 08 Jun 10

Just a sec though, if the Boot sector is damaged I think you will have to use/make a Boot Floppy or something?
