Onboard USB ports not working

After trying out a new camera on one of the USB sockets on the motherboard both have them have stopped detecting any devices.
In the Device Manager they are shown as working OK but still nothing is detected when I plug in.
I have two additional sockets and have had to get a USB hub to add my pockidrives etc (scanner and printer permanently connected there).
Has the onboard USB been fried and, if so, why is it showing up in the Device Manager without any problems?
Thanks
