Onboard sound not detected

I recently reformatted my XP pc and it now doesn't recognise the onboard sound chip. In the control panel it says "no audio device"

Its an MSI motherboard - don't know which model as I've lost the manual. So far I've done the following to try to get it working:

  • enabled onboard sound at the bios (it was already enabled anyway)
  • installed the original cd sound driver - soundblaster live 24
  • reformatted XP again

The only thing I can think that could have caused this problem is to do with the hardware. I changed the graphics card, hard drive and a pci ethernet card. While doing so there was a lot of fiddling around with the cables in the motherboard. I had reformatted previously but made no hardware changes and this did not affcet the onboard sound.

Could I have accidently unplugged a power or other cable that is used by the sound chip? I'm thinking of ordering a pci sound card or a usb sound dongle if I can't fix it - which one is the better?
