Old to new??

My computer is being replaced and the old one given to another family member.
The old system runs 98SE and the new XP.
I had it in mind to transfer one of the hard drives in the old computer into the slave drive on the new. In this way manage to keep a record of my documents, old programs and downloads.
Will this work or am I being amazingly naive?
I also plan to use the old drive as a backup device.

No problem for your documents and downloads; programs will need to be reinstalled though.

It is easy to fit a hard disk as slave - simply change the jumpers on it and install. Windows will recognise it.

Address book : simply open it and choose file, export.

What format are your emails? I mean what email client do you use?

I use 'Outlook Express'. My problem is that all messages are kept on my computer, NTL Broadband, and not kept in a file in a remote computer as in Yahoo. If I choose export, where do I send the files?
