i added an old hard drive at 630mg to an 350mhz pc with a 150w power suplly and it worked the first time i booted up and now it wont detect it. It says no fixed drives present could it have blown the drive

Try booting up from a bootup floppy - win98 or ME, and then choose minimal boot. then type in FDISK/status. If any hard disk is present in the system it will see it.

Where does it say "no fixed drives present"?
Have you gone into setup and either auto detect or set the parameters manually? Is the drive a slave to another drive and are the jumpers set accordingly? Have you fdisk and formatted the drive? Can you hear/feel the drive spinning? What OS are you using and are you trying to boot from this drive? Answers to these may give us some better pointers.
