old files in word

hi...i am trying to poen some not too old word files and it is telling me that it is not available...then when i close word it then tells me "the file normal already exisits would i like to replace it!!! hhhhhhheeelllppppppppp

This is probably the template normal.dot - not the file normal - can you confirm?

The usual cure for problems with the template normal is to delete it (or better rename it) and then let Word recreate it afresh - which it will do.

If you search for normal.dot (with Word CLOSED) - then change all the instances of it that are found, then restart Word - see if that helps.

try rebooting and then open word again - if still the same find normal.dot and rename it normal.old and then start word again. This will install a new copy of normal.dot.
