In my control panel I have various editions of java i.e: -

Java 6 Update 3
Java 6 Update 4
Java 6 update 5
Java 6 Update 6

Can I uninstall the first three?

I have Vista.

Yes, it's safe to uninstall them.

I don't know the circumstances in which you installed each newer version of Java, but when you do update, you're meant to uninstall the previous version. I read that somewhere in the Java site.
Call me fussy, but I also always unistall the previous version, and then do a clean up of the registry, before installing the newest version.

Unlike Anti_Virus, I do a tidy up from time to time and unistall old versions, up to 3 or 4 sometimes. I have never uninstalled before installing new version and have never had any problems.
