Old dvd-rom showing in device manager

  JYPX 21:11 31 Mar 07

New dvd writer installed ok and recognised by xp, but device manager shows both the new drive and the old dvd-rom drive. Tried uninstalling the old device then re-booting - the old device reappears, along with the new device. Tried uninstalling both devices, then re-booting, they both appear in device manager.
Tried both these things in safe mode - still no joy.
Any ideas? Or does it matter?
The device does not appear twice in windows explorer.

Hi, I don't suppose it matters, as long as it does not appear in explorer. However, I would guess that a quick flush-out with a RegClean program would probably get rid of the entry in devices.

Technotiger - Thanks for that idea. Sorry to say that Reg Mechanic has not shifted it.

Hmmm, how are you trying to uninstall the drive/entry?

From device manager. Right click dvd-rom drive.. Uninstall.
Any other methods?

That is the usual way, but also try Control Panel Add/Remove Hardware.

Control Panel>Add Hardware is what I meant to say - also has a troubleshooting option.

OK. Tried that. Device working ok! Troubleshooter does not have any option to fix/remove a phantom device. Oh well. Does not seem to be causing any problems. Thank you again.

Strange one - still as long as nothing else is affected, no need to worry.
