OIL PRICES and VIAGRA emails....!

In recent months the amount of email Im getting has about quadrupled. Every day now i get up to 30 emails about medication, viagra etc but most of them are about OIL prices and SHARES. What the hell are these about? Theyre not looking for you to buy anything and actually appear to be giving advice, and dont seem malicious in any way.

eg

"2005 was the year of the oil company with many of these
companies posting record profits. 2006 has been the year
of alternative fuels with companies involved in this sector
blowing off the charts. This trend shows no signs of
abating.
Our next feature is right in the thick of the high-growth
alternative energy sector and they are doing incredible
things."

Now i got that exact same email from about 10-15 different people (supposedly). SURELY in this day and age there is some way to avoid getting 30 of these a day.... and what the heck are they anyway?

everybody seems to be getting them (anyone I asked anyway) but yet I dont read of any great uproar about them. Whats the story anyone??!!

Unless you use mailwasher or change your email address, there is little that you can do. It costs nothing to send out 5 million emails...if you get 3 replies you are in a profit situation.......

Yes but its only in recent months that it has increased to this amount. Certainly before there used to be an occasional spam email but nothing like the quantity thats appearing now. The thing is there is nothing to respond to, or nothing to subscribe to so I dont see the point of them. And the same email coming from up to 15 people seems like a virus or something!

Get EPrompter, a great little progra. You can't stop spam but you can delete it before it gets to your computer.

Is it not the rule of thumb that the more you open and read the more you get?

I never open this sort of e-mail.

Depends on youre email provider, I use BTYahoo and most of the spam goes to my Bulk Box so it never reaches my computer.

That said the amount in there has increased lately seem to be getting 100 plus spams a day at the mo

These emails are frequently caused by someone with an unprotected computer having your email address harvested by one of these mass emailers. There's not much you can do about it other than changing your email address.

You can encourage other people to keep their PCs patched and protected. One theory about the recent surge in spam is discussed here click here

.

As I understand it a lot of these spam emails contain links to a graphic instead of embedding a graphic or use a graphic instead of text. This has the effect of making it difficult to detect the email as spam as the text can't be searched through if it is a graphic. Also as a graphic in the form of a link will be downloaded and the downloading of the graphic alerts the sender that the email address connecting to the link is "live". This "live" email address can be harvested and sold on.

How true or accurate the above is I don't know, but if you must open suspect emails switch off the ability to display graphics before you do so.

Peter.
