On switching on the power, the green power led and the red Hard drive led light up momentarilly and then nothing. Completely dead.I cannot get the system to start. Any ideas?

Mains fuse.
What computer have you - Desk Top/Laptop
Power cord connection in fully both ends.
Rear Power switch.
Be methodical in your approach.
The most likely cause is power supply failure.

Agree with jack....More than likely your Power Supply Unit has given up.

If you can borrow a compatible PSU, try it in the machine first to see if that is the problem prior to buying one.....Could also be a fried motherboard.

Did all the "obvious" checks. Power is getting to the Desk Top. I suspect a dry soldered joint, or more likely, the PSU.
Thanks for the suggestions

Unload Power Supply by disconnecting DVD and hard drives, will it then boot to an error message about missing drive?
