ntvdm.exe - 100% CPU Usage :'-(

I wonder if someone could help me with this VERY annoying problem.

My processor is taken up by the ntvdm.exe process. I can kill this task with no problem but everytime I reboot ... along it comes!

I know it's a program to allow 16 bit applications on a 32bit platform but why is it taking up so much resource!?

I've tried everything... virus scan, spyware and I'm up-to-date with the latest windows updates (Windows XP Professional with SP2)

I've even tried running SFC which appears to do nothing.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

MANY thanks

Start, run

Does it show up there? If so, you can disable it.

No.. I looked but I could not see it. Nothing in the services looks related.

Do you have any DOS or 16bit programs running?

  Terrylr 12:09 08 Feb 07

None at all. I even went into task manager and switched between the 'Show 16 Bit tasks' options. The total number of tasks reported the same in the status bar at the bottom.

Noting appears under the process in the task manager either.

See why I'm stuck!
