NTLDR is missing - pc won't boot

I keep getting this message at start up, it says NTLDR is missing press any key to restart.
Pressing any key just brings the same message.
I can boot from the windows XP pro cd, but if I restart without it I get the same message.
Anyone know what this is and can I fix it without a formatt?

Thanks.

Thanks for the link to the thread, I read through the postings and someone mentioned starting with a non-bootable disk, I checked my floppy drive and guess what?....everything is working normally again after removeng the disk,...what a plonker, oh well, I live and learn.

Thanks again.

Easily done, I think we've all done it.
