&system file ntoskrnl.exe,
(a) tell me what this is please.

since my reinstall of xp pro (some of you may have heard about it;)
my sygate firewall has been going barmy about this and saying it has prevented it from accessing the network,

is it safe? a threat or what please?

NTOSKRNL.EXE is a system file, Windows XP Service Pack 1 updated this file and as a security check Sygate is informing you that this file has changed since it was last allowed to access the internet. It is a AUTHENTIC file, so allow it to access the internet.

As far as the other error message:
- click start, run..
- type cmd, press enter
- type attrib C:\boot.ini -r then press enter
- close the window and follow the steps below

- click start, run..
- type edit C:\boot.ini, press enter
- remove the "/KERNEL=" switch that should be after your operating system listing
- then save the file
- reboot
