Notebook warranty query

I have had my notebook pc for about 8 months. However one of the keys tops on the keyboard has broken in half. The key top appears to have developed a single crack. I have a three year warranty but don't know if key tops are covered due to the following condition: "does not cover any damage to exterior surfaces however caused."

Is it likely that the notebook company would see keyboard damage as abuse or misuse of the system??

I may be wrong on this but would assume exterior means the casing. Surely the keyboard is an internal and integral part of the machines operating system.
