Not enough RAM

  123pete 23:51 15 Sep 06

I only have 256mb of RAM some of it is used by the onboard graphics (not for long). I am running xp home.
Can anyone suggest a program that can reliably improve the performance of my pc untill I am able to upgrade the system.
Thank you

I don't think loading your limited resources with more software will help. RAM isn't horrifically expensive, spend your money on that rather than software that won't help. Take your machine up to 512MB and you'll see a big improvement.

While you are at it, take your machine up to 1 gb(2 x 512k modules)

is right. It's more RAM or nothing. In the mean time you can try defragging your HDD, or cleaning or registry with CCleaner click here , or even just reinstalling windows XP. These are just temporary measures though, and RAM is the answer.

Is it a good idea to buy secondhand RAM from auction sites, or would this be a very bad idea.

Sorry about the lame questions.
is there a difference between DDR & DDR2
I have DDR2.

I found out which ram was compatible to my motherboard via click here ,then I went on ebay and got a pair of 512k ram sticks for £45 including delivery. Working well.

I have just put an extra 512MB in my machine, cost under £30 from PC World. The resulting improvement is unbelievable, it's now running like a new machine.
It wasn't very hard just make sure you get the right module first, and take all necessary precautions re anti-static.

The mother board is a:
FOXCONN P4M800P7MA don't know if this means much.
what would be the best RAM to buy.
