Not enough power for new graphics?

I recently upgraded my computer by changing a MX440 board for a Creative Blaster 5 FX5600.
Things went ok while I loaded the drivers and got the screen resolution sorted, but after I had loaded the demo programs (and before I had time to run them), the screen developed vertical bars and the computer hung.
I tried reset, but no boot, switching off and restarting, but the boot hung after the initial "mainboard" screen was displayed, and finally, after about 4 attempts, the system did complete a boot, but I got a message that Nvidia was reducing the performance due to insufficient power.
My screen res is 1152 x 864, refresh is 75 Hz, and I notice that the performance setting is "quality", not high perf.
The demos run well now.
As I have a 450W psu, and there is no extra power socket on this board, can anyone suggest what the problem was?
