Not detecting hard disk

A friend of mine has a Tiny computer running Windows ME and at boot up it says boot failure and in the BIOS it can't find the hard disk, it's says Not Installed, the computer has been opened up and all the IDE cables and the hard disk itself looks fine and in working order, tried a win ME boot floppy and CD ROM disk, this still does not work, keeps saying boot failure from disk, changed the first boot device in BIOS to different IDE cables, IDE-O right through to 3, but still no luck. She was originally working on Word when it crashed and she forced shut it down by keeping her finger on the power button, thanks for any help given, Rhuddlan.
