Norton Antivirus 2003 - Trojan Detection

I have Norton AntiVirus 2003 and Personal Firewall 2003 running on XP Home.
On a couple of occasions the Norton Suite has switiched itself off (It seems to be after making changes to the firewall Program control options).
I want to ensure that I have no trojans on the machine which may have installed themselves while the Norton suite was not running. I have a Broadband connection so the internet connection is always on.
Is running Norton AntiVirus scan disk sufficient to detect trojan horse programs on the PC or should I use something else in addition?
Thanks
