non-allocatable space

I have a problem with my Compaq laptop running win 98se.......addressing disks in CDRom previously formatted UDF using Ahead Nero software on an external drive, shows an item "non-allocatable space" which prevents any further file transfer onto the disk; it effectively considers the disk full when it isn't. seems to be software conflict, as sometimes I can address it without this message appearing and transfer files .....

any answers pls.

when origanally putting data on the disc it should have been set to multisession thereby allowing additions.what it has done is finalised the disc

no, I can still write to the disk on a different external drive ( on which it was originally created )
