Noisy laptop fan

I purchased an Evesham Voyager 5815 laptop a couple of months ago. The machine is great, but the fan is very very noisy. It is not a constant noise, but comes in (i presume) as and when required.
I emailed the Evesham helpdesk who told me this was quite normal on a machine of this spec. Is this true? If so is there anyway of reducing the noise?

im afraid it is, you'll find on the own branded laptops the fan is really noisy and annoying. my IBM is as silent as a silent thing and my previous Sony was a ok aswell. however, a couple of colleagues have had own brand/unknown brand laptops and they have been really noisy.

It probably is true, but there are some things you may be able to do:

1 - do you have speed step technology on the laptop - if so, ensure it is active and when on batteries the laptp will only use the necessary processing power thus reducing temperature and fan use.

2 - keep plenty of space behind the laptop so that there is ventilation.

3 - check if there is anything blocking the fan (such as dust, fluff etc.) so that it may be underperforming when it comes on.
