I want to re-install windows but the computer was bought with win xp home already installed - but no disc. however the product key is on the side. Can I use this instead, or if not, why is it there?

If the computer is a recognised make rather than home built then it will probably have a recovery partition with all the necessary files to recreate the PC back to how it was when purchased. Watch the screen while it is booting up and there will probably be a message telling you to press a key to Recover the PC. This is often the F10 key.
