No Volume Controls

I have just purchased a cheap computer for the kids with windows 98 installed. It works fine until they want to play a CD. We have no sound. There is a sound card installed but we can not access the volume controls. I have gone through all the help files with no success. It appears that the volume controls haven`t been installed and the computer prompts me for the Windows CD which I don`t have. Have I been sold a pup or is there some way around this? Can I download the volume controls from any where? Please help. I can`t put up with their grubby fingers on my computer any longer

Miss Molly have you looked under

>settings>control panel>sounds&multimedia>and ticked 'show volume control on task bar';

or ......>audio>volume and checked the options are not muted?
