I was going to buy an external hard disc but i only have usb1 ports rather than usb2 will this still work because i have heard it can be quite slow.

It will be painfully slow on large transfers or for backing up too. Why not install a usb 2.0 card? Less than a tenner from most local pc stores.

As De Marcus™ - painfully slow on USB 1. USB 2 is approx 40 times faster.

As a point of interst, if you were going to install a usb 2.0 card, you'd need to open the case and to my mind if the case needs opening anyway, you may as well install an internal drive (if it's not needed for portability) they're a lot cheaper.
